Associate Scientist I | Bioprocessing

Watertown, MA

About the Role:

Your primary role as an Associate Scientist at EnPlusOne is to work with staff scientists and process engineers as an expert at protein expression, purification, and characterization. Your responsibilities include assisting with the scale-up of protein expression and purification activities. You will help improve standard operation protocols revolving around biochemistry and bioprocessing operations as well as have the opportunity to contribute to the synthesis platform through individual research projects at the discretion of the management team. Additional responsibilities include thoroughly documenting experimental results and observations, the preparation of quality control reports, research presentations, and contribute to any arising patent applications and publications.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related field such as biology, biochemistry, or bioprocess engineering is required.
  • At least 2 years of wet lab technical or research experience is strongly preferred; education may count towards years of experience in exceptional cases.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with bacterial culturing, transformation, and cloning techniques including optimization of protein expression and overall productivity in small- to mid-scale bioreactors.
  • Knowledge of protein purification techniques including the use of FPLC instrumentation, general protein chromatography at scale, tangential flow filtration (TFF), and buffer exchange techniques.
  • Experience performing a range of molecular biology assays to characterize protein product purity, quality and concentration with minimal supervision including gel electrophoresis, western blotting, ELISA, UV-Vis spectrometry, etc. following SOPs.
  • Familiarity with oligonucleotide characterization, protein mutagenesis techniques, PCR amplification, optimization & primer design, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and MALDI-TOF is a bonus.

Senior Scientist I | Biochemistry

Watertown, MA

About the Role:

Your primary role as a Senior Scientist I – Biochemistry at EnPlusOne Biosciences is to help lead efforts in the laboratory to further advance the state of scaled enzymatic RNA oligonucleotide synthesis. You will support the “EnPlusOne Biology Engine” by managing protein expression/purification activities and improve platform capabilities through various molecular biology projects. You will play a critical role in developing an enzymatic synthesis pilot lab and leading the completion of key technological milestones. You will manage junior staff members and lead the creation of standard operating protocols for biochemistry and bioprocessing unit operations. You will work closely with chemists and engineers to optimize, troubleshoot, and develop various processes for the enzymatic synthesis platform. Additional responsibilities include thoroughly documenting experimental results and observations, preparing quality control reports, presenting research results, and contributing to any arising patent applications or publications. Successful candidates are motivated, curious, flexible, and able to collaborate and communicate in a multidisciplinary environment.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a biological science or related field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or bioprocess/biochemical engineering is required.
  • At least 5-8 years of wet lab technical or research experience, specifically relating to protein expression, purification, and characterization in the synthetic biology and oligonucleotide synthesis fields. A PhD may count towards years of experience.

 

Desired Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in oligonucleotide synthesis, nucleic acid chemistry and enzymatic kinetics/characterization
  • Excellent skills in molecular biology and related techniques such as PCR, qPCR, electrophoresis, & NGS
  • Demonstrated competency in bacterial plasmid design, transformation, cloning, and culturing
  • Expert at protein mutagenesis, expression, and purification techniques at mid- to large-scale
  • Hands-on experience with instrumental analysis via HPLC, LC/MS, MALDI-TOF, and FPLC
  • Experience with in vitro expression systems, assay development, bioconjugation techniques
  • Demonstrated ability for project management, digital record keeping, and maintenance of SOPs

 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, protocol development and troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Ability to work well independently and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group is essential.
  • Can lead projects and delegate specific tasks to junior team members, educating when necessary.

Senior Process Engineer

Watertown, MA

About the Role:

The Senior Process Engineer specifies, designs, and installs process equipment and systems in direct support of manufacturing operations. He/she provides analysis of process requirements and the evaluation of equipment and systems to ensure deliverables meet or exceed process specifications.  In addition, the Senior Process Engineer will develop process specifications, design review, process piping engineering, installation, and start-up of process equipment projects.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for process and equipment specification and design for new and modified process systems, including development of PFD’s and P&ID’s. Prepare material and energy balance calculations to support process utility requirements. Develop and present supporting engineering calculations as required.
  • Carry out projects of any scope to design, install and modify plant equipment, processes and facilities including bioreactors and downstream processing systems.
  • Define process requirements and establish project design criteria based on engineering analysis and evaluation. Prepare detailed functional specifications.
  • Engineer, design, install and start-up process equipment.
  • Coordinate other engineering disciplines as required for project completion.
  • Supervise maintenance personnel, technicians and outside contractors during fabrication, installation, and start-up activities.
  • Prepare and issue engineering documentation, operating procedures, maintenance procedures and validation protocols. Prepare detailed equipment specifications.
  • Manage projects as assigned: Prepare estimates, ROI, schedules and status reports, specify and procure materials, complete project assignments on-time and within budget.
  • Develop and document standard templates for manufacturing processes.
  • Assist in the development and maintain engineering design standards and guidelines.
  • Provide diagnostic troubleshooting assistance to maintenance and project technicians as assigned.
  • Ensure that work conforms to all applicable codes and regulations such as OSHA, NEC and cGMP. Follow safe practices and comply with all of the Company safety regulations.
  • Propose modifications to equipment, processes and operations to improve safety, increase efficiency and enhance company goals.
  • Develop detailed system operational sequence and parameter tables.
  • Prepare detailed equipment and instrumentation specifications for pumps, valves, regulators, filters, piping, traps, etc. If applicable, design appropriate testing methods to ensure performance achieves process design parameters. 
  • Manage projects as assigned including preparing Gantt chart schedules, punchlists, and status reports. When appropriate conduct project design review and/or status meetings for project team members and sponsoring departments.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in chemical or mechanical engineering plus a minimum of 8 years experience in an industrial, chemical and/or pharmaceutical industry directly supporting the design and implementation of process equipment and piping systems. Minimum 2 years-experience in an FDA & cGMP regulated industry.
  • Solid basis in process equipment design including process equipment components, instrumentation, pumps, valves, filters, traps, regulators, etc.
  • High degree of computer system and software application experience including Windows, Windows NT, EXCEL, database applications including dBase and Access and Excel. Working knowledge of Unicorn is a plus.
  • Hands on approach during project installation and start-up activities.
  • Proven project engineering development and management experience. Must have initiative to plan and carry out projects with minimum supervision.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
