Senior Scientist I | Surface Chemistry
Watertown, MAAbout the Role:
Your primary role as a Senior Scientist at EnPlusOne is to lead efforts in the development, optimization and quality control of functionalized solid supports used in scaled enzymatic RNA oligonucleotide synthesis. You are responsible for the development, characterization and batch manufacturing of various solid support materials and chemistries to enable high efficiency oligonucleotide synthesis in the bulk liquid phase or fluidized and/or packed bed reactors. You will determine and characterize physical properties of solid supports such as loading capacity, porosity, and interactions with enzymatic synthesis reaction components through various analytical and chemical techniques. You will work closely with staff biochemists/chemists to provide key feedback on enzyme or nucleotide building block development and optimization. You will also work with process and automation engineers to ensure maintained solid support functionality under reaction and system conditions. Additional responsibilities include documenting experimental results and observations, the preparation of quality control reports, research presentations, and contribute to any arising patent applications and publications.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD or MS in a relevant subject (chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, surface chemistry, materials science/engineering or physical chemistry) is required.
- At least 5-8 years of wet lab technical or research experience is strongly preferred; education may count towards years of experience in exceptional cases.
- Hands on experience with solid support development, characterization, and manufacturing, especially for use in the oligonucleotide, peptide, or general biopolymer space.
- Deep expertise of surface chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, and/or physical chemistry, especially in context of fluidized and/or packed bed reactors in conjunction with proteins/enzymes.
- Experience with linker chemistries and bioconjugation techniques as well as synthesizing, characterizing, and using porous materials.
- Familiarity with oligonucleotide synthesis and characterization, controlled pore glass (CPG) as well as various analytical techniques such liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and microscopy (light, fluorescence, atomic force, transmission/scanning electron microscopy, etc.)
Additional Qualifications:
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, protocol development and troubleshooting skills are required.
- Ability to work well independently and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group is essential.
- Should be highly motivated, detail oriented, organized, an initiative taker & effective communicator.
- Willing to participate in publishing of manuscripts and the filing of patents apps describing new IP.
